battle of britain
Not long after Winston Churchill became prime minister the Battle of Britain began. The battle started in July of 1940. Operation Sea Lion which was Hitler's invasion of the British Isles was thought to be the instigator to this battle. The Luftwaffe was the German Air Force and it was later defeated by Britain's Roysl Air Force (RAF). This battle was wholly fought by air. On June 18, 1940 which is about a month before the Battle of Britain started Winston Churchill delivered his "Finest Hour" speech in the House of Commons. Another one of Winston's speeches was recited about a month after the battle began on August 20, 1940. Churchill recognized the good attitude and dedication of his Air Force and how he took pride in them.
